Creating a first blog post can be intimidating. Luckily, the Internet offers a broad selection of tutorials, tricks and how-tos to make everything so simple, just about anyone can do it. Creating a blog is all about figuring out your voice and how you want to communicate to your audience. Regardless of the subject matter, your main goal should be to connect to your readers and keep them engaged with what you have to say.
If you are just starting out and need help choosing a topic to write about, you can browse our list of post ideas. These topics are open ended, eye care oriented and will always be relevant to the reader.
There is a simple format for laying out a blog post, which we will get into shortly. The most important elements you will need to include is:
- Engaging headlines and titles
- Well written content
- Quality images relative to your content
The subject matter you are writing about can vary from post to post, but quality content and relative imagery will always be the backbone of a blog entry. Once your text and visuals are prepared, you can start formatting your content. We recommend using our perfect layout for a successful blog post.
To show how relative content can be implemented into the perfect layout template, we have mocked up a blog post on Extended Fit sizing in the eyewear industry below.
For your convenience, you can download a copy of Zyloware’s Extended fit guide so that you can have an easy reference to PD sizing on the go.
Don’t Forget the #hashtags!
A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash mark (#) used within a message to identify a keyword to topic of interest and facilitate a search for it. When a user adds a hashtag to their post, it is immediately indexed by the social platform and becomes searchable by other users. Once someone clicks on a hashtag, they’ll be brought to a page that aggregates all of the posts with the same hash-tagged keyword in real-time.
The 3 key marketing strategies for hashtags are:
- Keep it brand and campaign specific
- Use hashtags that are trending
- Ensure hashtags are relevant to your content
Just as we use hashtags on all other platforms of social media, we also use them on blogs… but in a slightly different way called tagging. Tagging your posts helps people to find them in the Reader which increases the chances of a new visitor stopping by to check out your blog. Examples of tags can be found at the bottom of this page. (You will see the following tags referenced for this post: Blog Layouts, Blogging 101, Blogging Tutorial, Perfect Blog Post, We Are Social, We Are Zyloware, Zyloware Eyewear, Retail Optical Circle). Tagging also helps viewers find your page on search engines by making it more discoverable.
Remember, the best way to create a meaningful blog that will attract readers is by simply writing about what you already are familiar with (many people make the mistake of assuming you have to be an expert on something to have a blog – this is definitely not a necessity for creating quality content). The more natural your conversation sounds, the more receptive your audience will be. Bring insight, perspective and knowledge and before you know it, you will be blown away with how much you have to say!
