Today is all about celebrating the one and only, Shaquille O’Neal!

March 6th is the Big Diesel’s birthday, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate his 46th with him! Shaq may be known for his larger than life persona and dominating skills on the basketball court, but we wanted to shout out some of Shaquille’s other impressive stats… did you know he has a doctorate degree, or that he is a well-known DJ? Here are 5 facts you didn’t know about the big guy himself, Shaquille O’Neal.

  1. He earned a doctoral degree… not just an honorary doctorate, in education.

His capstone topic was “The Duality of Humor and Aggression in Leadership Styles.” He even kept an impressive 3.81 grade-point-average while in school!

  1. He’s released four studio albums.

That’s in addition to a pair of compilation albums, two soundtracks, one unreleased album and nine singles. His debut record, 1993’s Shaq Diesel, went platinum.

Bonus: He nearly collaborated on a song with The Smashing Pumpkins during the late ‘90s. Billy Corgan’s backing track for the demo was loosely based on Dr. Dre.

  1. He’s taken a vow to protect and serve

With his extensive involvement in sports, business and the arts, you’d think Shaq wouldn’t have time to protect the average citizen on the street, but that’s exactly what he’s done. The Big Diesel signed on a reserve officer with the Los Angeles Port Police after joining the Lakers in the late 1990s, and by 2005 he had also become an honorary deputy in Bedford County, Virginia and an honorary U.S. Deputy Marshal in Miami. After retiring, he added to his credentials by being sworn in as a deputy in Broward County, Georgia. Clearly influenced by his military upbringing and two uncles who served on the force, he has stated a desire to become a police chief or sheriff someday.

  1. He’s a philanthropist
