Keeping your eyes protected during the summer

Now that summer is here and we’re spending the long days outside, it’s important to take care of your eyes! UV exposure is extremely damaging to your vision, so taking the proper measures to protect your eye sight is key. Here is a little more about the risks associated with UV exposure and what you can do to prevent sun damage.

UV radiation – UVA and UVB:

UVB is the second longest UV ray and reaches the atmosphere; it has a wavelength ranger of 290 to 320 nm. Although these aren’t the shortest wavelengths, it still reaches us and plays an important role in conditions like premature skin cancers, aging, and eye damage. When you are laying around at the beach all day long and you come home to burnt skin, UVB is the reason why your skin is burned. UVA is the longest wavelength and can penetrate deep into the dermis, the skins thickest layer, which can cause genetic damage to cells, photo-ageing, and immune-suppression, along with skin cancers.

While most sunglasses protect against UVB, they do not protect against UVA. If the sunglasses are protected against UVA, they will so say upon purchase. The myth that if the sunglasses has a darker tint, means that they are protecting against more sun rays in false. The protection against UVB and UVA rays coating is the same on any color lenses. If you do not protect your eyes, you may be increasing your chances of forming cataracts at a younger age. Source: WebMD.

Cataracts is when your eyesight becomes blurry. People who have cataracts describe their vision like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. People can also experience no vision in dim lighting, seeing halos around lights, or loss of vision. Studies have shown that people who stayed in the sun tended to get cataracts 8-10 years before people who mostly stayed in the shade/ indoors. Source: Mayo Clinic.

Protecting your eyes from UVA and UVB exposure is crucial – our collection of Randy Jackson and Via Spiga sunglasses offer polarized lenses with 100% UVA and UVB protection so you can enjoy fashionable eyewear and reduce the risk of sun damage to your eyes.

Tips For a Safe 4th of July Celebration:

4thof July typically goes hand in hand with fireworks. However, fireworks can become a very dangerous activity, especially for children. In the most serious cases, fireworks can rupture the globe of the eye, cause chemical and thermal burns, corneal abrasions and retinal detachment. All of these afflictions can cause permanent eye damage and affect a person’s sight, even losing it. In the most recent study from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 10,500 injuries needed treatment in emergency rooms, were from fireworks. This study also pointed out that not everyone injured in firework accidents were handling the fireworks themselves. In fact, nearly half of the people injured were  bystanders. Nearly 35% of the victims injured are 15 years or younger. Source: AAO.org
