World Sight Day is quickly approaching on October 10th and to celebrate the day Zyloware is breaking down everything you need to know about the event and how you can get involved!
The mission of the day is to bring attention to the global issue of avoiable blindness and visual impairment. At Zyloware this mission is very important to us. Our vision goal is to help people see a beautiful day, every day. We started National Eyewear Day to promote that goal by providing free eye health exams and eyewear for those in our community who need it.
What is World Sight Day?
Sight Day (WSD) is an international day of awareness, held annually on the second Thursday of October to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. This year World Sight Day falls on October 10, 2019. The theme of World Sight Day 2019 is Universal Eye Health, while the event ‘call to action’ isVison First.
World Site Day began in 2000 and is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). It has evolved into a global event aiming to spread awareness and advocate about importance of proper eye care and health. World Sight Day provides a platform for organizations to encourage governments, corporations, institutions, and individuals to actively support global blindness prevention efforts.
The prevalence of blindness and vision impairment combined has dropped from 4.58% in 1990 to 3.37% in 2015.
89% of vision impaired people live in low and middle-income countries
55% of moderate or severely vision impaired people are women
Participate on Social Media:
IAPB is focusing all efforts on promoting the hashtag #VisionFirst this year. We invite you to join us in promoting this hashtag in the run-up to World Sight Day. Do add your messages and information along with the hashtag.
Promote Eye Examinations:
WSD is a great day for awareness raising and informing potential customers and donors of the causes of avoidable blindness and means of eradicating them. If the focus is cataract, glaucoma, refractive errors or diabetic retinopathy, it all begins with an eye exam. This year, for the week leading up to World Sight Day organize a chain – ask every customer who walks in for an eye exam to bring in two more customers. Inform them of the need to get one’s eyes tested.
Donate to the World Site Day Challenge
The World Sight Day Challenge is the largest annual global fundraising campaign to address avoidable blindness caused by uncorrected refractive error. Participating is easy – simply make a monthly or annual donation during October!
